A mysterious unseasonal blizzard covers Northern Japan, causing the area to freeze over. This catches the attention of the heroine, who sets out in the direction the blizzard is blowing in, hoping to uncover the culprit of this mysterious snowstorm.

Hoppo Fuyu Kyuden ~ Elegant Frozen Castle (北方冬宮殿 Northern Winter Palace) is a shooter game for the PICO-8 fantasy console heavily inspired by the Touhou Project series of games. You take control of a heroine who must shoot her way through 4/5 (stage count undecided) grueling stages to end the snowstorm plaguing her homeland of Northern Japan. Throughout the escapade, you will face bosses and tough opponents who will try to end your run. Defeating a boss at the end of the stage will advance you to the next. You can also use bombs that will damage enemies, clear projectiles, and damage bosses. Taking one hit will take a life and some of your power, scattering it around the area of damage.  If you lose all of your lives, it's game over. When you get a game over, you have the choice to use a continue. Using a continue will quash your chances of a 1CC run, and you only get three.
